As autumn deepens in Kyoto, the ancient temple of Kiyomizu-dera—one of Japan’s most iconic World Heritage Sites—has begun its annual special night viewing. During this limited period, the temple grounds glow brilliantly as nearly 1,000 maple trees and the famous Kiyomizu Stage are illuminated by about 500 lights, creating a spectacular scene that floats gently above the hillside.
Founded in 778, Kiyomizu-dera has watched over Kyoto for more than 1,200 years. The temple is dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, whose compassion is symbolized by a mysterious blue beam of light stretching westward from the main hall during the illumination. This blend of spiritual symbolism and natural beauty is one of the reasons why the temple attracts millions of visitors every year.
The highlight of any visit is the Kiyomizu Stage, a vast wooden veranda built without nails, projecting dramatically from the cliffside. From here, visitors can admire a sea of fiery red and golden maple leaves that seem to shimmer against the night sky. The interplay of light, architecture, and autumn colors offers a uniquely serene experience that feels timeless—an unforgettable moment for travelers seeing Kyoto’s cultural heart.
The special night viewing continues until December 7, with lights switching on at 5:30 p.m. and admission accepted until 9:00 p.m. Tickets cost 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary and middle school students.

Staying quiet on temple grounds, following staff instructions, keeping pathways clear, and refraining from touching or damaging trees and structures all help preserve this sacred place. 清水寺のライトアップ ― 京都での魔法のような夜景
秋が京都で深まるにつれて、日本で最も象徴的な世界遺産のひとつである 清水寺 では、毎年の「夜間特別拝観」が始まっています。この期間限定のイベントでは、境内の 約1,000本のモミジ や有名な 清水の舞台 が 約500基の照明 によって鮮やかに輝き、丘の斜面の上にそっと浮かんでいるような壮観な景色をつくり出します。
778年に創建された清水寺は、1,200年以上にわたって京都を見守ってきました。寺は慈悲の仏である観音に捧げられており、その慈悲は、ライトアップの期間中、本堂から西の空へ伸びる不思議な青い光によって象徴されています。こうした精神的な象徴性と自然の美しさの組み合わせが、この寺が毎年何百万人もの訪問者を引きつける理由のひとつです。

夜間特別拝観は 12月7日まで 行われ、ライトアップは 午後5時30分 に始まり、午後9時 まで拝観が受け付けられます。拝観料は 大人500円、小中学生200円 です。
