Korakuen Garden in Okayama, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, is celebrated for its changing seasonal beauty. Among its many highlights, the plum blossoms (ume) are especially beloved, as they are one of the earliest signs that spring is approaching in Japan.
In mid-January, a traditional winter task known as plum branch pruning began in the garden. This annual work is carefully carried out to prepare the trees for the coming blooming season. By trimming crowded branches, gardeners improve air circulation, prevent pests, and shape the trees so they will bloom more beautifully in the weeks ahead.
Korakuen’s plum grove covers about 1,500 square meters and is home to around 100 plum trees of roughly 20 varieties. Skilled gardeners use pruning shears and small saws to remove excess branches, working efficiently but with great care. Some early-blooming varieties, such as Yaefuyutōji and Hanakami, are expected to start flowering soon, while the best viewing season for the entire grove usually lasts from early February to early March .
An interesting cultural touch is that branches cut during the pruning—still bearing small buds—are sometimes sold to visitors at a modest price. Garden staff hope that people will enjoy watching the buds slowly grow and open indoors, feeling the subtle transition from winter to spring even in the cold season .
This quiet winter work may not be as spectacular as full bloom, but it plays a vital role in creating the elegant scenery Korakuen is known for. It also reflects a Japanese appreciation for nature—not only at its peak, but throughout every step of its seasonal preparation.
後楽園で行われる梅の枝切り ― 春への準備
日本三大名園の一つである岡山の後楽園は、季節ごとに移り変わる美しさで知られています。その数ある見どころの中でも、**梅の花（ume）**は、日本において春の訪れを最も早く告げるものの一つとして、特に親しまれています。
1月中旬、園内では「梅の枝切り」と呼ばれる伝統的な冬の作業が始まりました。この毎年行われる作業は、これから迎える開花シーズンに向けて、梅の木を整えるために丁寧に行われます。込み合った枝を切り落とすことで、風通しが良くなり、害虫の発生を防ぎ、数週間後により美しく花が咲くよう樹形を整えます。
後楽園の梅林は約1,500平方メートルの広さがあり、およそ20品種・約100本の梅の木が植えられています。熟練した庭師たちは、剪定ばさみや小さなのこぎりを使いながら、手際よく、そして細心の注意を払って余分な枝を取り除いていきます。早咲きの品種である「八重冬至」や「花香実」は、まもなく開花を迎える見込みで、梅林全体の見頃は例年、2月上旬から3月上旬にかけて続きます。
また文化的に興味深い点として、枝切りで切り落とされた、まだ小さなつぼみを付けた枝が、手頃な価格で来園者に販売されることがあります。園の職員は、寒い季節の中でも、室内でつぼみが少しずつ膨らみ、花開いていく様子を楽しみながら、冬から春へのささやかな季節の移ろいを感じてほしいと話しています。
満開の華やかさに比べると、この静かな冬の作業は目立たないかもしれません。しかし、後楽園ならではの優雅な景観を生み出すうえで欠かせない工程であり、自然の最も美しい瞬間だけでなく、季節が形づくられていく過程そのものを大切にする、日本人の自然観を映し出しています。
