While Kyoto and Osaka continue to draw visitors with their iconic temples and dazzling cityscapes, a quieter but equally captivating destination is beginning to shine: Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake, located just a short journey from both cities. Now, a series of brand-new boat routes is set to make exploring this hidden gem easier and more exciting than ever.

The routes include:
- Otsu Port – Nionohama Pier (3 km, 15 min)
- Kusatsu Karasuma Peninsula – Nionohama Pier (9 km, 45 min)
- Ogoto Onsen – Karasuma Peninsula (4 km, 15 min)
All routes operate on weekends and holidays, with fares ranging from 500 to 1,200 yen—making it a budget-friendly and scenic alternative to cars or trains.
Why It Matters for Travelers
One of the highlights is the “Lake Biwa Museum Cruise”, which connects the stunning Biwako Museum with Ogoto Onsen, a hot spring resort that welcomes over 400,000 guests a year. Until now, it took about an hour by bus and train—but now? Just 15 minutes by boat.
Visitors can also enjoy the newly opened LAGO Otsu, a stylish waterfront café and shop by the famous Japanese sweets brand Taneya, located right near Nionohama Pier. It’s a perfect place to sip coffee while watching boats glide across the lake.

湖上交通の復活：杢兵衛造船所が新航路を開設
この取り組みの中心にいるのは、大津市にある杢兵衛（もくべえ）造船所です。1872年創業のこの老舗造船所は、観光船「ミシガン」などの建造にも関わってきました。
昨年、造船所は草津市の琵琶湖博物館とおごと温泉を結ぶ試験的なルートを運航しました。さらに、地元の有名和菓子店「たねや」から新店舗オープンにともなう交通対策の相談を受けたことがきっかけで、地域関係者との協議を経て、正式な航路の設立が決定しました。
3つの航路で観光地を結ぶ
新航路には以下の3ルートが含まれています：
- 大津港〜におの浜観光桟橋（約3km、片道15分、1日7往復）
- 草津烏丸半島港〜におの浜観光桟橋（約9km、片道45分、1日3往復）
- おごと温泉港〜草津烏丸半島港（約4km、片道15分、1日2往復）
これらの航路は、杢兵衛造船所が所有する船舶によって、土日祝日に運航されます。
湖の上での移動が旅の一部に
におの浜桟橋の近くには、たねやの新店舗「LAGO大津」が2024年3月にオープンしており、同社はこのルートが渋滞解消だけでなく、観光客にとって新たな目的地になることを期待しています。
また、「琵琶湖博物館クルーズ」と名付けられたルートでは、博物館と温泉へのアクセスが向上します。通常、電車とバスを使えば約1時間かかる道のりが、船でならたったの15分です。
おごと温泉観光協会は「年間約40万人が訪れるおごと温泉と博物館を結ぶことで、相乗効果を生み、観光の魅力が高まる」と述べています。
湖上からの眺めで新しい発見を
4月8日には、関係者向けに試乗会が開催されました。大津港〜におの浜観光桟橋間を航行する船からは、比叡山や湖岸の市街地の景色を一望でき、大津市の佐藤健司市長は「船上からの眺めは新鮮で、新たな魅力を感じた」と話しています。
地元と訪問者の双方にとっての価値
乗船料金はルートによって500円〜1,200円となっており、今後の乗客数などの状況を見ながら、平日運航や便数の拡大も検討されます。
杢兵衛造船所の常務である仲野智之氏は、「もっと多くの人が気軽に船に乗れるようにし、国内外の人々に琵琶湖の体験を広めていきたい」と語っています。
このクルーズは、京都や大阪など関西エリアから簡単にアクセスできるため、週末の気軽な旅先としても最適です。伝統と現代が交差する関西において、**琵琶湖はまさに“再発見される風景”**なのかもしれません。
