The forest fire that broke out on February 26 continues to spread in Ōfunato City, Iwate Prefecture, which is located on the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku region.
This area was one of the hardest-hit regions during the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, a disaster widely reported in international news. As the region was steadily recovering, another tragedy has struck. Thinking about the people affected, I find myself at a loss for words.
Iwate Prefecture is a region rich in natural blessings and full of world-class attractions.
1. A World-Class Fishing Hub
The Sanriku Coast is home to one of the world’s three great fishing grounds, providing an abundance of fresh seafood.
2. Traditional Culture & Local Delicacies
- Wanko Soba – A fun and unique experience where small bowls of soba noodles are continuously served until you say, “I can’t eat anymore!”
- Morioka Reimen & Jajamen – Noodles with influences from Korean and Chinese cuisine, offering a distinct and flavorful experience.
3. A Treasure Trove of Fine Sake
Iwate is home to many sake breweries, producing exquisite Japanese sake that pairs perfectly with local seafood.
Famous brands like Nanbu Bijin, Asabiraki, and Hamachidori have earned high acclaim both in Japan and internationally.
4. Stunning Natural & Cultural Landmarks
- Chūson-ji Temple in Hiraizumi (World Heritage Site) – Home to the breathtaking Golden Hall (Konjikidō), a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
- Jōdogahama Beach – A picturesque landscape where emerald-green waters meet striking white rock formations.
I sincerely hope that people around the world will show their support for the resilient people of Iwate, who continue to overcome hardships with strength and determination.

大船渡の山林火災 焼失面積1200ヘクタールに 対岸からも炎見え
2/26に起きた山林火災が今も広がっている岩手県大船渡市は東北エリアの日本海側に位置します。
このエリアは海外のニュースでも大きく取り上げられた2011年３月11日「東日本大震災」の被災地です。震災からの復興が進む中で、また新たな災害に見舞われた方々のことを思うと、言葉になりません。

岩手県は多くの酒蔵があり、地元の海鮮料理と相性抜群の日本酒が造られています。
「南部美人」「あさ開」「浜千鳥」 など、国内外で評価の高い銘柄も多数！
4. 美しい自然と観光スポット
平泉の中尊寺（世界遺産）：金色堂が美しく、歴史ファンにおすすめ。
浄土ヶ浜：エメラルドグリーンの海と白い岩が織りなす絶景スポット。
