About a month ago, on March 30, we reported that the cherry blossoms (sakura) had reached full bloom in Tokyo. Since then, the “sakura front” — a poetic term used in Japan to describe the northward movement of blooming cherry trees as temperatures rise — has slowly advanced up the country. Now, at the end of April, it has reached the southern part of Hokkaido.
In Hakodate, one of Hokkaido’s major cities, the famous Goryokaku Park is now at its peak bloom. On April 27, the park was crowded from early morning with both local citizens and visitors from across Japan and overseas, all eager to see the stunning display. Around 1,500 cherry trees, mainly the beloved Somei Yoshino variety, are in full bloom, coloring the historic site with soft pink hues.
Goryokaku itself is a star-shaped fort, originally built in the 19th century during the final years of the Edo period. From the 90-meter-high observation deck of the adjacent Goryokaku Tower, visitors can admire a breathtaking view: the cherry blossoms appear to bloom along the fort’s iconic star-shaped layout, creating a truly unforgettable sight.
A 23-year-old woman visiting from Sapporo shared her experience, saying, “The park was so crowded that I gave up on going up to the observation deck, but walking among the cherry trees inside the park was so beautiful, I can’t even put it into words.”
The journey of the sakura front is a unique phenomenon that captures the hearts of many in Japan each spring. It reminds us not only of the changing seasons but also of the deep cultural connection between Japanese people and these fleeting, delicate flowers.

函館・五稜郭で桜が満開に
約1か月前の3月30日、私たちは東京で桜（サクラ）が満開になったことをお伝えしました。それ以来、「桜前線」——日本では、気温の上昇とともに桜の開花が北上していく様子を詩的に表現する言葉——がゆっくりと北へ進んできました。そして4月の終わり、ついに北海道南部へ到達しました。
北海道の主要都市の一つである函館では、有名な五稜郭公園が現在、桜の見頃を迎えています。4月27日、公園は早朝から、国内外から訪れた観光客や地元市民で賑わいました。園内には約1500本の桜の木（主に人気のソメイヨシノ種）があり、歴史ある場所を柔らかなピンク色に染めています。
五稜郭自体は、江戸時代末期に建てられた星形の要塞です。隣接する五稜郭タワーの地上90メートルの展望台から眺めると、五稜郭の特徴的な星形の輪郭に沿って桜が咲き誇り、まるで巨大な花が咲いたかのような絶景が広がります。
札幌から訪れた23歳の女性会社員は、次のように感想を話してくれました。「人が多すぎて展望台に上がるのはあきらめましたが、公園内の桜は言葉では表せないほどきれいでした。」
桜前線の旅路は、春ごとに多くの日本人の心をとらえます。それは季節の移り変わりを感じさせるだけでなく、はかなく美しい桜の花と日本人との深い文化的つながりを思い起こさせるのです。
