In a heartwarming turn of events, the future of one of Japan’s most beloved grassroots music festivals, the Takatsuki Jazz Street, has been secured. Thanks to overwhelming community support, the festival’s organizing committee has successfully raised over ¥9.1 million (approximately $60,000 USD) through a crowdfunding campaign—far surpassing their ¥7.5 million goal.
Held annually during Japan’s Golden Week holidays on May 3rd and 4th in Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture, the Takatsuki Jazz Street is no ordinary music festival. Since its humble beginnings in 1999, this event has been entirely free of charge and driven by local volunteers, making it one of the largest citizen-organized jazz festivals in the country. Its stages are scattered throughout the city—public squares, shopping streets, civic halls—transforming the entire town into a musical playground.
The festival has traditionally relied on T-shirt sales and local sponsorships to cover its costs. However, in 2024, rising prices and economic strain resulted in a ¥7.5 million deficit, threatening the festival’s very existence. The possibility of cancellation loomed large, raising concerns among fans and musicians alike.
But the response from supporters was nothing short of inspiring. Over 1,000 individuals contributed to the crowdfunding effort, ensuring that the music will play on next year.
“We’re incredibly grateful,” said Junichiro Kitagawa, a 58-year-old member of the organizing committee. “It’s rewarding to see that our passion for keeping the festival alive has reached so many people. It’s tough, but we’re committed to keeping it free.”

毎年、ゴールデンウィーク中の5月3日と4日に大阪府高槻市で開催される「高槻ジャズストリート」は、普通の音楽フェスティバルではありません。1999年のささやかな始まり以来、このイベントは完全無料で、地元ボランティアによって運営されており、日本最大級の市民主導型ジャズフェスティバルの一つとなっています。会場は市内の公共広場、商店街、市民ホールなどに分散しており、街全体が音楽の遊び場に変わります。
これまでフェスティバルの運営費はTシャツの販売や地元スポンサーにより賄われてきました。しかし2024年には、物価高騰と経済的な負担により750万円の赤字が発生し、イベント存続が危ぶまれました。中止の可能性も浮上し、ファンやミュージシャンに大きな不安を与えました。
しかし、支援者からの反応はまさに感動的でした。1000人以上がクラウドファンディングに協力し、来年の開催が可能となりました。
「本当に感謝しています」と語るのは、実行委員の北川潤一郎さん（58歳）。「私たちの情熱が多くの人に届いたのがうれしい。大変ですが、これからも無料を貫きたいです。」
