Starting in 2025, two of Kamakura’s most popular hydrangea-viewing temples—Hasedera and Meigetsu-in—are taking new steps to manage growing crowds during peak season. At Hasedera Temple, visitors who wish to enter the famous hillside “Ajisai Path,” where around 2,500 hydrangea bushes of 40 varieties bloom from late May to late June, will need to purchase a special “Ajisai Viewing Ticket” in addition to the standard admission fee. These tickets can be reserved online with a designated entry time, allowing for a smoother visit. Please note that the path includes many stairs and is not wheelchair accessible.
In Japan, the arrival of the rainy season doesn’t just mean umbrellas and damp shoes—it also signals the quiet yet spectacular debut of a beloved seasonal icon: the hydrangea, or ajisai in Japanese. Most of the year, these plants go unnoticed, blending quietly into the landscape. But come rainy season, they suddenly emerge in full color, offering a fleeting moment of wonder.
