If you’re looking for a unique way to experience Japan beyond the typical tourist trail, hop on a bike and explore the scenic shores of Lake Hamana in Shizuoka Prefecture. While many travelers pass by this stunning lake en route between Tokyo and Nagoya on the Shinkansen or via expressways, few realize that it’s a destination worth stopping for — especially now, with a new cycling initiative gaining traction.
In an exciting move to boost tourism and revitalize the area, JR Central (Central Japan Railway Company) has launched its very first rental bike service around Lake Hamana. Known for its eel farming and relaxing hot spring resorts, the lake area is now positioning itself as a must-visit cycling destination. As project lead Mr. Yasuomi Shimizu says, “We want people to think of Lake Hamana when they think of cycling in Japan.”
The new Bentenjima Cycle Gate, located near Bentenjima Station on the Tokaido Line, offers around 60 high-quality bicycles, including cross bikes and electric-assist “e-bikes,” with rental prices ranging from 2,000 to 7,000 yen per day. From here, cyclists can set off on a picturesque 70-kilometer loop around the lake. For those not up for the full course, Kanzanji Onsen, a charming hot spring town just 15 km away, makes for a perfect mid-point destination.
One of the best features? One-way rentals are allowed. Visitors can return their bikes at Kanzanji and hop on a convenient bus back to Hamamatsu Station. That leaves plenty of time to soak in an onsen or enjoy a delicious eel meal, a local specialty.
Lake Hamana is now joining the ranks of Japan’s famed cycling spots like the Shimanami Kaido and Lake Kasumigaura. But unlike those, Lake Hamana offers excellent access from Tokyo or Osaka — just 90 minutes by Shinkansen, making it a practical day trip or weekend getaway.
To make the deal even sweeter, JR Central is offering discounted tourism coupons worth 2,500 yen (valid at local eateries and hot springs) for just 500 yen to online Shinkansen ticket holders.
At the grand opening event held in Hamamatsu on May 31, local leaders and even members of the idol group SKE48 came out in support. Hamamatsu Mayor Yusuke Nakano noted, “Until now, most people just passed by Lake Hamana. But with this new initiative, we’re giving travelers a reason to stop and enjoy everything the area has to offer.”
So next time you travel along Japan’s Golden Route, consider getting off the train — and onto a bike. Lake Hamana awaits.

新たに設けられた弁天島サイクルゲートは、東海道線の弁天島駅近くに位置し、クロスバイクや電動アシスト付き「eバイク」など、約60台の高品質な自転車を取りそろえています。レンタル料金は1日2,000円から7,000円です。ここから出発すれば、サイクリストは約70キロの周回コースを巡ることができます。全コースを走らなくても、約15キロ先の舘山寺温泉まで行くのにちょうど良い距離で、初心者にも最適です。
最も便利な点のひとつは、片道でのレンタルが可能なことです。旅行者は舘山寺で自転車を返却し、浜松駅行きの便利なバスに乗って戻ることができます。これにより、温泉でのひとときや、地元名物のうなぎ料理なども楽しむ余裕が生まれます。
浜名湖は今や、しまなみ海道や霞ヶ浦といった日本の有名サイクリングスポットに肩を並べようとしています。しかし、それらと違い、浜名湖は東京や大阪から新幹線でわずか90分という素晴らしいアクセスを誇り、日帰り旅行や週末の小旅行に最適です。
さらにJR東海では、ネットで新幹線予約をした人向けに、うなぎ店や日帰り温泉などで使える2,500円相当のクーポンを500円で販売するキャンペーンを実施しています。
5月31日に浜松市で行われた開業セレモニーには、地元関係者のほか、アイドルグループSKE48のメンバーも参加し、レンタサイクルの利用を呼びかけました。浜松市の中野祐介市長は「これまでは多くの人が浜名湖を通過するだけだったが、こうした新しい仕組みによって地域の魅力が体験でき、素晴らしい効果が生まれる」と語り、この事業を歓迎しました。
