Fujisawa City, located just south of Tokyo, is home to some of Japan’s most popular beaches—including Katase Nishihama and Kugenuma—where the official start of the swimming season was recently celebrated with a traditional umi-biraki (beach opening) ceremony.
This festive event, attended by local officials and around 200 participants including the Fujisawa tourism ambassador, actor Takeshi Tsuruno, marks the beginning of a busy beach season. Last year, the area attracted over 20 million visitors, demonstrating its immense popularity among locals and tourists alike. As part of the ceremony, a traditional ritual by Enoshima Shrine was conducted to pray for the safety of beachgoers, and the newly crowned “Queen and Prince of the Sea” were introduced to the public.
In Japan, the opening of public beaches is carefully planned and typically involves setting up lifeguard patrols and ensuring other safety measures are in place. This emphasis on safety helps both Japanese and foreign visitors enjoy the sea with peace of mind.
However, in recent years, the country has been facing a growing challenge: a shortage of trained lifeguards. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the number of certification courses and new recruits—especially among younger people—has decreased significantly. As a result, some beaches in Japan have had to forgo official openings due to insufficient safety staff.
To tackle this issue, communities like Kamakura have been proactive in recruiting volunteers, including middle-aged and older beachgoers who want to give back to the ocean they love. Some hope that in the future, more international lifeguards will join the ranks to support Japan’s beach culture and safety.
If you are visiting Japan this summer, Fujisawa’s beaches are an excellent destination—offering both the excitement of the sea and the warmth of local hospitality. Just remember to swim within designated areas and follow lifeguard instructions to ensure a safe and memorable experience.
夏の始まり：藤沢の海水浴場が正式にシーズン開幕
東京のすぐ南に位置する藤沢市は、日本で最も人気のある海水浴場のいくつか、たとえば片瀬西浜や鵠沼海岸を有しており、最近、伝統的な「海開き」の式典で海水浴シーズンの正式な開始が祝われました。
この華やかなイベントには、藤沢観光親善大使である俳優のつるの剛士さんを含む地元の関係者およそ200人が出席し、にぎやかなビーチシーズンの始まりを告げました。昨年、この地域には2,000万人を超える観光客が訪れ、その人気の高さが示されました。式典では、江島神社による伝統的な儀式が行われ、海水浴客の安全が祈願され、「海の女王」と「海の王子」も新たに選ばれて披露されました。
日本では、公設の海水浴場の開設は慎重に計画されており、通常はライフガードの配備やその他の安全対策の整備が伴います。このような安全への配慮により、日本人も外国人観光客も安心して海を楽しむことができます。
しかしながら、近年、国全体で訓練を受けたライフガードの不足という課題に直面しています。新型コロナウイルスの流行以来、資格取得講習の回数や新規志願者、特に若年層の数が大きく減少しました。そのため、安全要員が不足し、十分な監視体制を整えることができないという理由で、海開きができないビーチも出てきています。
この問題に取り組むために、鎌倉などの地域社会では、海を愛する中高年のボランティアを含む新たなライフガードの確保に積極的に取り組んでいます。将来的には、国際的なライフガードが日本の海水浴文化と安全対策を支援する機会が増えることも期待されています。
もしこの夏、日本を訪れるのであれば、藤沢のビーチは絶好の目的地です。海の楽しさと地元の温かいおもてなしの両方が味わえます。ただし、安全で思い出深い体験とするために、指定された区域内で泳ぎ、ライフガードの指示には必ず従いましょう。
