And among the many peach-producing regions in Japan, Fukushima Prefecture stands out as one of the most celebrated.
Recently, the early-ripening peach variety Hatsuhime (meaning “First Princess”) made headlines during its first auction of the year at the public wholesale market in Fukushima City. Grown in Fukushima and neighboring Date City, two premium boxes of Hatsuhime, each containing 16 carefully selected peaches, were sold for an astonishing 100,000 yen (about 620 USD) per box.
These top-grade peaches were purchased by Aoki Fruits, a well-known fruit retailer based in Koriyama City. Nobuhiro Aoki, the company’s 77-year-old chairman, said, “I wanted to support and promote Fukushima’s peaches. I hope to deliver the growers’ passion to our customers.” True to his word, the peaches were promptly displayed at Aoki Fruits’ main store and Tokyo location on the same day.
The peach season in Fukushima begins with Hatsuhime and continues with other popular varieties like Akatsuki and Sakura Hakuto until late September. According to JA Zen-Noh Fukushima, this year’s bloom was ideal, with no damage from frost, promising an excellent harvest.
For visitors to Japan in the summer months, tasting a fresh Fukushima peach is a must. It offers not just a flavor of the season, but a glimpse into the care, tradition, and pride that Japanese farmers pour into their work.
