One of Japan’s most colorful and beloved summer traditions, the Tanabata Festival (Star Festival), has begun in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. Known officially as the Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival, this event is one of the largest of its kind in Japan and attracts close to one million visitors over three days.
What is Tanabata?
Tanabata is a traditional Japanese festival based on a legend that originated in China. It tells the romantic story of Orihime (the Weaving Princess) and Hikoboshi (the Cowherd Star), two lovers represented by the stars Vega and Altair.
