On July 12, the lively sound of traditional music filled the streets of Gujo Hachiman, a picturesque town in Gifu Prefecture, as one of Japan’s most iconic summer dance festivals, Gujo Odori, officially began. Locals and visitors dressed in colorful yukata formed a large circle in front of the Gujo Hachiman Former Government Memorial Hall, dancing joyfully into the night.
With a history tracing back to the Edo period (1603–1868), Gujo Odori is more than just a festival—it’s a living tradition.
