If you ever needed proof that Japanese pop culture has become a global language, look no further than the World Cosplay Summit in Nagoya. From August 1st to 3rd, fans of anime and video games from over 40 countries are gathering in central Japan—not just to watch, but to become their favorite characters.
Celebrating its 23rd year, the World Cosplay Summit is the largest event of its kind, drawing both professionals and passionate amateurs. The city of Nagoya transforms into a stage, with the famous Osu Shopping Street hosting a vibrant cosplay parade on August 2nd, and the Cosplay Championship—where 82 contestants from 41 countries and regions compete for the global crown—taking place on August 3rd.
But what makes this festival uniquely Japanese is the wholehearted participation of public officials. Governor Hideaki Omura of Aichi Prefecture dressed as “King Piccolo” from Dragon Ball, dramatically shouting the character’s famous attack line, “Makankosappō!” Meanwhile, Nagoya Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa appeared in costume as Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin, reminding visitors to stay hydrated in the summer heat. Their playful involvement reflects not only local pride but a deep respect for the power of cosplay to transcend borders.
Among the many international participants was Tanisa from Switzerland, wearing a Pauline costume from the game Mario Tennis. “It’s my first time in Nagoya,” she said, smiling. “I’m looking forward to sightseeing too.”
While the economic impact of such a large-scale event is certainly welcome, what truly matters is the joy of shared imagination. Cosplay is more than dressing up—it’s a form of cultural exchange that requires no translation. Whether you’re from Tokyo or Toronto, São Paulo or Seoul, everyone speaks the same language when they become their heroes.

しかし、この祭典を特に「日本らしいもの」にしているのは、公務員たちの全面的な参加です。愛知県の大村秀章知事は『ドラゴンボール』の「ピッコロ大魔王」の衣装を着て登場し、キャラクターの有名な必殺技「魔貫光殺砲！」のセリフを力強く叫びました。一方、名古屋市の広沢一郎市長は『るろうに剣心』の緋村剣心の姿で現れ、「名古屋の夏は暑いので、水分補給を忘れずに楽しんでほしい」と訪問者に呼びかけました。彼らの遊び心に満ちた参加は、地元の誇りだけでなく、国境を越えるコスプレの力への深い敬意を表しています。
多くの国際的な参加者のなかには、スイス出身で『マリオテニス』のポリーンの衣装を着たタニーサさんもいました。「名古屋は初めてです」と彼女は笑顔で語り、「観光も楽しみにしています」と付け加えました。
このような大規模イベントがもたらす経済的効果はもちろん歓迎されますが、本当に大切なのは、想像力を共有することによって生まれる喜びです。コスプレは単なる仮装以上のものであり、翻訳を必要としない文化交流の形なのです。あなたが東京出身であろうと、トロント、サンパウロ、ソウル出身であろうと、誰もがヒーローになったとき、同じ言語を話すのです。
