Fans of Studio Ghibli around the world may be delighted to hear that the real-life inspiration for My Neighbor Totoro is being protected for the future. The city of Higashimurayama, located in western Tokyo, has decided to purchase and preserve a 1.1-hectare area of forest known as Yakushiyama Green Space. This forest lies at the eastern edge of the Sayama Hills, the landscape often said to have inspired the world of Totoro.
The area is home to rare plants such as golden orchids and silver orchids, making it an important part of the region’s natural heritage. Higashimurayama worked together with the Totoro no Furusato Foundation, which previously purchased a smaller adjoining section named “Totoro’s Forest No. 56” in 2021. This is the first time the city itself has bought land next to one of these preserved Totoro Forest sites.
The city plans to use national and metropolitan subsidies to fund the project, with around 290 million yen budgeted for the land acquisition. About three-quarters of the area will be kept as a protected natural zone, while the remaining quarter will become a walking area with safety fences and walking paths.
For many Japanese, My Neighbor Totoro represents the nostalgic countryside landscape of childhood. By preserving this forest, the city hopes to pass this scenery on to future generations. For visitors from overseas, this may become a special place to experience the atmosphere of Totoro’s world in real life — and perhaps to feel the same sense of wonder that inspired Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved film.
トトロの森を未来の世代のために保全
世界中のスタジオジブリファンは、『となりのトトロ』の実際のモデルとなった場所が未来のために保護されるというニュースを喜ぶかもしれません。東京西部に位置する東村山市は、薬師山緑地として知られる1.1ヘクタールの森林地帯を購入し、保全することを決めました。この森林は、しばしば「トトロ」の世界にインスピレーションを与えたと言われる狭山丘陵の東端にあります。
この地域には、キンランやギンランなどの珍しい植物が生息しており、地域の自然遺産の重要な一部となっています。東村山市は、2021年に隣接する小規模な区画を「トトロの森56号地」として購入した「トトロのふるさと基金」と協力しました。市がこの保全された「トトロの森」の隣の土地を購入するのは今回が初めてです。
市は、国や東京都からの補助金を使ってこのプロジェクトを資金調達する予定で、土地取得費として約2億9000万円を計上しました。区域のおよそ4分の3は自然保護ゾーンとして維持され、残りの4分の1は安全柵や遊歩道を備えた散策エリアになります。
多くの日本人にとって、『となりのトトロ』は子ども時代の懐かしい田園風景を表しています。この森林を保護することで、市はこの景観を未来の世代へ引き継ぎたいと望んでいます。海外からの訪問者にとっても、ここはトトロの世界の雰囲気を実際に体験できる特別な場所となり、宮崎駿の愛される映画にインスピレーションを与えた同じ驚きの感覚を感じられるかもしれません。
