In Japan, Otsukimi—the moon-viewing festival—is one of the most beautiful and poetic seasonal traditions. It is held on the night of the full moon known as Chushu no Meigetsu (the Harvest Moon), which falls on the fifteenth night of the eighth month in the old lunar calendar. Families and friends gather to admire the brilliant moon, decorate their homes with susuki (Japanese pampas grass), and offer tsukimi dango (round rice dumplings) to express gratitude for the autumn harvest.
This year, on October 6th, the community of Mishima in Shizuoka Prefecture celebrated this tradition in a heartwarming way. At Mishima-Hirokoji Station, members of the local railway retirees’ association handed out bundles of susuki and other autumn flowers such as fujibakama and ominaeshi—plants known as part of Japan’s “Seven Flowers of Autumn.” It was their 17th annual event, and about 100 bundles were prepared for local residents to take home and enjoy during the moon-viewing night.
For many in Japan, Otsukimi is more than just a seasonal custom. It is a moment of quiet reflection and shared wonder—whether you watch the moon with family, a loved one, or simply by yourself, everyone gazes at the same glowing moon in the sky. In recent years, even fast-food chains have joined the celebration with special “moon-viewing” burgers topped with a sunny-side-up egg, symbolizing the full moon.
As the bright autumn moon shines in the clear night sky, Otsukimi continues to connect hearts across generations, reminding people of nature’s beauty and the gentle passage of time.
ススキとともに名月をめでる：日本の時を超えた伝統
日本では、「お月見（Otsukimi）」は、最も美しく詩的な季節の伝統のひとつです。
それは「中秋の名月（Chushu no Meigetsu）」として知られる満月の夜に行われ、旧暦の8月15日にあたります。家族や友人が集まり、輝く月をながめ、ススキ（susuki） を飾り、秋の実りに感謝して丸い団子（月見団子）をお供えします。
今年は10月6日、静岡県三島市の人々がこの伝統を心温まる形で祝いました。伊豆箱根鉄道の三島広小路駅前では、地元の鉄道OB会のメンバーが、ススキ や、秋の七草として知られる フジバカマ や オミナエシ などの秋の花を束にして配布しました。この活動は17回目を迎え、およそ100束が地域の人々のために用意されました。
多くの日本人にとって、「お月見」は単なる季節行事ではありません。それは静かな内省と共有された感動のひとときです。家族と、恋人と、あるいは一人で月をながめるとしても、みんなが同じ輝く月を見上げています。近年では、ファストフード店でさえ、この季節限定の特別メニューを発売しています。上に目玉焼きをのせた「月見バーガー」は、まんまるな満月を象徴しています。
澄んだ秋の夜空に明るく輝く月のもとで、「お月見」は今も世代を超えて人々の心をつなぎ、自然の美しさと時のやさしい流れを思い起こさせてくれます。
