A new “through-guided tour” is now available at Tomioka Silk Mill, one of Japan’s first modern industrial facilities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour, launched by the Tomioka City Tourism Association, allows visitors to explore both the silk mill and the surrounding town with the same guide. It is offered in English and Chinese, making it more accessible to international visitors.
During the three-hour tour, participants can step inside the Nishi-Okimayujo (Western Cocoon Warehouse), a National Treasure that is normally closed to the public. Guests can also stroll through the charming backstreets of Tomioka, taste local treats such as “silk-infused sweets” and “hormone-age” (deep-fried offal snacks), and experience the unique atmosphere of a town that prospered alongside Japan’s silk industry.
The Tomioka Silk Mill, established in 1872 with French technical support, played a crucial role in Japan’s modernization by introducing advanced silk-reeling technology. Today, its red-brick factory buildings and serene townscape preserve the ambiance of the Meiji era.
Tour prices range from ¥17,000 for two people to ¥45,000 for eleven participants (¥75,000 and ¥160,000 for English or Chinese tours). Reservations must be made at least ten days in advance via the association’s website “Tasuki.”
The Tomioka City Tourism Association encourages visitors to “walk through Tomioka with guides who know the town’s hidden gems and history shared with the women who once worked here.” This new tour offers a deeper way to experience Japan’s industrial heritage and the enduring spirit of its silk culture.
日本の絹の遺産を探る：富岡製糸場の新しいガイドツアー
日本で最初期の近代的な工業施設のひとつであり、ユネスコ世界遺産にも登録されている富岡製糸場で、新しい「スルーガイドツアー」が利用できるようになりました。
このツアーは富岡市観光協会によって開始され、同じガイドが製糸場とその周辺の町の両方を案内します。英語と中国語にも対応しており、海外からの訪問者にとってより利用しやすいものとなっています。
3時間のツアーでは、通常は一般公開されていない**国宝・西置繭所（にしおきまゆじょ）**の内部に入ることができます。
また、富岡の魅力的な路地裏を歩き、「シルク入りのお菓子」や「ホルモン揚げ」といった地元の味を楽しみながら、日本の製糸産業とともに発展してきた町の独特な雰囲気を体験できます。
1872年にフランスの技術支援を受けて設立された富岡製糸場は、先進的な製糸技術を導入することで日本の近代化において重要な役割を果たしました。
現在でも、その赤レンガの工場建物や静かな町並みは、明治時代の面影をそのまま残しています。
ツアー料金は、2人で17,000円から、11人で45,000円まで（英語または中国語ツアーはそれぞれ75,000円と160,000円）となっています。予約は、少なくとも10日前までに観光協会のウェブサイト「襷（たすき）」から行う必要があります。
富岡市観光協会は、「町の隠れた名店や、かつてこの地で働いた女性たちとともに歩んだ富岡の歴史を知る地元ガイドと一緒に散策を楽しんでほしい」としています。
