Every November, the ancient streets of Kyoto’s Gion Higashi district come alive with one of Japan’s most graceful traditions—the Gion Odori, an annual dance performance presented by the geiko and maiko (geisha and apprentice geisha) of Gion Higashi. This year’s show opened on November 1st, enchanting audiences with its theme centered around the fan (ōgi)—a symbol of beauty, grace, and refinement in Japanese culture.
The performance, titled Suehiro-ōgi no Sōshi (“The Tale of the Auspicious Fan”), unfolds through six dynamic scenes. It includes historical tales such as the famous Nasu no Yoichi, who shot down a fan with his arrow during the Genpei War, as well as playful depictions of traditional games like Tōsenkyō, where fans are tossed with elegant precision. The finale, the beloved Gion Higashi Kouta, brings all the performers together to sing about the changing seasons of Gion, closing the performance in a flourish of color and song.
Unlike other hanamachi (geisha districts), Gion Higashi’s dance festival is unique in that it is held in the autumn, beautifully complementing Kyoto’s vivid fall foliage. The event not only preserves Kyoto’s centuries-old performing arts but also offers visitors from around the world a rare glimpse into Japan’s living traditions—where artistry, discipline, and hospitality meet in perfect harmony.
Performances run through November 10 at Gion Kaikan, with two shows daily at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. For those visiting Kyoto this season, the Gion Odori is a must-see—a poetic experience that embodies the timeless spirit of Japan.
祇園をどり開幕：京都の秋の優雅さを祝う華麗な祭典
毎年11月、京都・祇園東の古い街並みは、日本で最も優雅な伝統のひとつである「祇園をどり」によって活気づきます。
この公演は、祇園東の**芸妓（geiko）と舞妓（maiko）によって披露される年に一度の舞踊公演であり、日本文化における美しさ、気品、そして洗練の象徴である扇（おうぎ）**をテーマにした今年の演目は、11月1日に幕を開け、観客を魅了しました。
公演のタイトルは『末広扇草子（すえひろがりおうぎのそうし）』で、6つの場面で展開されます。
その中には、源平合戦で扇を矢で射落とした那須与一の有名な物語や、優雅な所作で扇を投げる伝統的な遊び「投扇興（とうせんきょう）」を描いた場面などが含まれています。
フィナーレでは、祇園東の四季を唄う愛唱歌『祇園東小唄（ぎおんひがしこうた）』が披露され、全出演者が舞台に揃い、色彩と歌に満ちた華やかな幕引きを迎えます。
他の花街（はなまち）（芸妓の町）と異なり、祇園東の舞踊祭は秋に開催されるのが特徴であり、京都の鮮やかな紅葉と見事に調和しています。
