Japan is known around the world for its vibrant pop culture, especially anime and video games. Fans from many countries travel to Japan to experience these creative worlds firsthand. One event that celebrates this culture in a very unique way is Machi★Asobi, which will be held again this spring in Tokushima.
The upcoming edition of Machi★Asobi, scheduled for May 16–17, will mark the 30th time the event has been held. First launched in 2009, it takes place mainly in the downtown area of Tokushima and is usually organized twice a year, in spring and autumn. What makes this event special is that the entire city becomes part of the festival. Streets, parks, and cultural spaces turn into stages for anime, games, music, and fan activities.
Visitors can enjoy many kinds of attractions. Cosplayers dressed as their favorite characters gather for photos, voice actors perform live on stage, and animation studios present talks and exhibitions about their latest work. Fans also have the rare chance to meet creators and performers who bring their favorite stories to life.
For the 30th event, organizers are planning more than 100 programs, aiming for the largest Machi★Asobi yet. One highlight will feature composer Go Shiina, who created much of the music for the popular anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. A special band will perform live music from anime soundtracks, including dramatic background scores and insert songs that fans will instantly recognize.
More than 15 animation studios are also expected to participate, making the event an important gathering point for the anime industry and its fans. At the same time, Machi★Asobi keeps a relaxed, playful atmosphere that welcomes both dedicated fans and curious travelers.
Another fun feature of the event is its creative use of local locations. In past festivals, temporary saunas were set up near the Shinmachi River waterfront park. This time, organizers are planning a sauna experience at the summit of Mount Bizan, where visitors can relax while enjoying a panoramic view of the city.
By blending anime culture with the everyday spaces of a Japanese city, Machi★Asobi offers something truly different from typical conventions. For fans of Japanese pop culture, it is not just an event—it is a chance to experience anime and games as part of real life in Japan.
