As the Osaka-Kansai Expo marks its one-month anniversary since opening on April 13, it’s already proving to be a hub of global culture, innovation, and connection. For one Japanese visitor from Ibaraki Prefecture, this world fair is much more than a local event—it’s the continuation of a lifelong passion sparked decades ago.
Her fascination with world expos began in 1985, when the Tsukuba Expo was held in her hometown. That experience ignited a love for international exhibitions, leading her to travel to expos across the globe over the years. Now, with the world’s attention turned to Japan once again, she is reliving that early excitement—this time, much closer to home.
To make the most of the Osaka-Kansai Expo, she rented an apartment near the venue on Yumeshima, an artificial island in Osaka. She even left her job at the end of last year after being selected as a volunteer, determined to immerse herself fully in the experience. On opening day, she arrived on the first train, eager to witness the opening ceremony and explore the sprawling site.
For her, the Expo offers a kind of “world travel without a passport.” Each day is filled with new cultural encounters, multisensory experiences, and cutting-edge technology. She has become a regular visitor, often arriving before the gates open at 9 a.m., and spends her time exploring both national pavilions and thematic zones like “Tech World,” where visitors can engage with futuristic innovations.
One of the most memorable exhibits so far has been in a pavilion hosted by a Japanese company showcasing “the future of sleep.” In one corner, beds equipped with sensors analyze body data and adjust the mattress angle to provide optimal rest—a demonstration that left her deeply impressed.
Among the international pavilions, often referred to as “the jewels of the Expo,” she was particularly captivated by the Malaysia Pavilion. The attention to detail in the food displays, complete with realistic food samples and tantalizing aromas, made a lasting impression. She also recommends visiting the pavilions from Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, which offer rich and colorful insights into Southeast Asian cultures.
She encourages all visitors to walk the “Great Roof Ring,” the world’s largest wooden structure and the architectural symbol of the Expo. “It’s a must-see—great for photos from below, but even better when you walk its full circle,” she says with enthusiasm.
Having explored about half the venue so far, she hopes to complete her journey by the end of May. As a volunteer guide, she also shares her knowledge with fellow visitors, helping them discover the hidden gems of the site. For her, the Expo is not just an event—it’s a celebration of humanity’s diversity, creativity, and potential.

大阪・関西万博、開幕から1か月：パスポートのいらない旅
4月13日に開幕した大阪・関西万博が、開幕から1か月を迎えた今、すでに世界の文化、革新、そしてつながりの中心地となっている。茨城県出身のある日本人の来場者にとって、この万博は単なる地元でのイベントではなく、何十年も前に始まった長年の情熱の延長線上にある。
彼女が万博に魅了されたのは、1985年に地元で開催された「つくば万博」がきっかけだった。その体験が、彼女の国際博覧会への愛を呼び起こし、それ以来、世界各地の万博を訪れるようになった。いま再び、世界が日本に注目しているこのタイミングで、彼女はその当時の興奮を再び味わっている――今回はより身近な場所で。
大阪市の人工島・夢洲にある会場の近くにアパートを借り、日本開催の万博を最大限に楽しむため、昨年末には会社も辞めた。ボランティアとして選ばれたこともあり、万博に完全に没頭することを決意したのだ。開幕日には始発電車で駆けつけ、オープニングイベントを見届け、広大な会場内をくまなく見て回った。
彼女にとって万博は「パスポートのいらない世界旅行」だ。毎日が新たな文化との出会いにあふれ、五感で体験できる多様な世界と最先端の技術に触れることができる。彼女は今でもよく、午前9時の開場前から並び、「テックワールド」などのテーマゾーンや、国・地域の文化を祝う「ナショナルデー」の催しに足を運んでいる。
特に印象に残っている展示のひとつは、日本企業が出展するパビリオンの「未来の眠り」の体験だった。センサー付きのベッドが身体の状態を測定し、マットレスの傾きが変化することで最適な眠りへ導いてくれる仕組みは、彼女に強い驚きを与えた。
「万博の華」とも呼ばれる海外パビリオンの中では、マレーシア館が特に印象的だった。リアルな食品サンプルの精巧さと、実際においしそうな匂いまで漂ってくる点に心を奪われたという。また、インドネシア、タイ、フィリピンのパビリオンもぜひ訪れるべきだと語る。
会場のシンボルである世界最大の木造建築「大屋根リング」は、彼女のお気に入りスポットのひとつ。「来た人はぜひ上まで行って一周してほしい。下からでも最高の写真が撮れる」と声を弾ませる。
現在までに会場内のおよそ半分を巡り終えており、5月中にはすべて回りたいと意気込んでいる。案内ボランティアとしても活動しており、「自分が歩いて得た“知識”で、少しでも来場者の役に立てたら」と語る。
彼女にとって万博とは、単なるイベントではない。人類の多様性、創造性、そして可能性を称える、壮大な祝祭なのだ。
万博初心者も、つくば万博を原点とするベテラン訪問者も、大阪・関西万博では数え切れないほどの学びと出会い、そして感動を味わうことができるだろう。
