The Hirosaki Neputa Festival
Hirosaki’s version of the Neputa festival is distinguished by its more restrained, fan-shaped floats—unlike the towering, dome-shaped ones seen in nearby Aomori City’s Nebuta festival. Hirosaki Neputa has a slightly more subdued tone, reflecting the samurai heritage of the region.
The festival follows different routes during its run:
- August 1–4: The floats parade through the Dote-machi area.
- August 5–6: The procession moves to the area around JR Hirosaki Station.
- August 7: The final day includes a morning parade through Dote-machi, followed by the traditional “Nanukabi Okuri”, in which the floats are symbolically burned along the banks of the Iwaki River—a ritual believed to send off the spirits of the festival.
This year, 68 groups—two more than last year—are expected to participate, and some floats will even allow tourists to join in the procession, making it an interactive experience for visitors.
Special Feature: “Showa 100” Contest
2025 marks the 100th year of the Showa calendar (a nostalgic way of referencing 2025 in Japan), and to commemorate this milestone, a special event will be held: the “Showa Neputa Front Lantern Contest.” Participating groups will dress in retro Showa-era outfits as they parade their floats, and judges will select one Grand Prize and two Runner-Up winners for their creativity and authenticity.

この祭りでは、日によって異なるルートを練り歩きます：
- 8月1日〜4日：土手町地区を巡行します。
- 8月5日〜6日：JR弘前駅前のエリアを運行します。
- 8月7日：最終日には、午前中に土手町を巡行し、午後からは岩木川の河川敷で、山車を象徴的に焼く伝統儀式「なぬかびおくり」が行われます。これは、祭りの精霊を送り出すための儀式と考えられています。
今年は、昨年を2団体上回る68団体が参加予定であり、その中には観光客が自由に参加できる山車もあります。これにより、訪問者にとってもインタラクティブな体験となるでしょう。
特別企画：「昭和100年」コンテスト
2025年は、日本における「昭和100年」にあたる年であり（※西暦2025年＝昭和100年という考え方）、この節目を記念して特別イベント「昭和のねぷた前燈籠コンテスト」が開催されます。参加団体は昭和時代を思い起こさせる衣装で山車を運行し、審査員がその創造性と忠実さをもとに、グランプリ1団体、準グランプリ2団体を選出します。
