In Japan, the soft, tinkling sound of wind chimes—called furin—is more than just a pleasant noise. It’s a seasonal signal, a cultural treasure, and a reminder of the refined way Japanese people sense and celebrate summer. While many countries associate summer with heat and noise, in Japan, summer is often remembered by the quiet elegance of a wind chime dancing in the breeze.
This week, in Echizen Town, Fukui Prefecture, a special event called “4,000 Tones of Ceramic Wind Chimes” is taking place at the Echizen Ancient Kiln Museum. Over 4,000 wind chimes, all crafted from traditional Echizen-yaki ceramics, have been hung along the wooden corridors and eaves of an old folk house. As they sway gently in the wind, they create a chorus of soft, cooling tones—inviting visitors to slow down and savor the moment.
The event has been held annually since 2019 to promote Echizen-yaki, one of Japan’s six oldest pottery traditions. This year features handmade creations by 17 ceramic artists, including a new design: a large wind chime with a 30 cm-wide umbrella-shaped bell, known as the Shiawase no Isshaku Tofūrin or “One-shaku Ceramic Wind Chime of Happiness.” All pieces are available for purchase, allowing visitors to take a piece of tranquility home with them.
Japan is home to many iconic wind chimes—made from glass in Edo (Tokyo), iron in Iwate, or pottery in regions like Echizen—and each type reflects the spirit of its local culture. But what they all share is their power to create an atmosphere of coolness and peace. Perhaps what is most beautiful is not the object itself, but the human heart that feels cooler simply by hearing it.

越前に美しさの涼風をもたらす4,000個の風鈴
日本では、柔らかくチリンと鳴る風鈴の音は、ただの心地よい音ではありません。それは季節の合図であり、文化的な宝物であり、日本人が夏を感じ、祝う洗練された方法を思い出させるものです。多くの国が夏を暑さや騒がしさと結びつける中で、日本では夏は風鈴が風に揺れる静かな優雅さで記憶されることが多いのです。
今週、福井県の越前町では、越前古窯博物館で「越前焼『陶ふうりん』四千の音色♪」という特別なイベントが開催されています。4,000個以上の風鈴が、古い民家の木造の廊下や軒先に吊るされており、すべて伝統的な越前焼で作られています。そよ風にやさしく揺れながら、それらは涼しげな音のハーモニーを奏でており、訪れた人々にゆっくりとした時間とひとときの味わいを与えてくれます。
このイベントは、日本最古の陶芸六古窯のひとつである越前焼を広めるために2019年から毎年開催されています。今年は、17人の陶芸作家による手作りの作品が並び、直径30センチの傘の形をした新デザイン「幸せの一尺陶ふうりん」も登場しています。すべての作品は購入可能で、訪れた人が涼やかさを家に持ち帰ることができます。
日本には、江戸（東京）のガラス、岩手の鉄、越前の陶器など、各地を代表する風鈴がありますが、どれもその土地の文化の精神を反映しています。しかし、それらすべてに共通するのは、涼しさと平穏の空気を生み出す力です。おそらく最も美しいのは、風鈴そのものではなく、それを聞いて「涼しさ」を感じる人間の心なのかもしれません。
