On July 1st, the traditional summer spectacle of Ukai, or cormorant fishing, began on the Uji River in Kyoto Prefecture. For the first time in three years, the season’s opening took place on schedule, thanks to stable river conditions. Visitors gathered along the riverbanks to witness this ancient and mesmerizing form of fishing, illuminated by the glowing flames on boats gently drifting through the night.
Ukai is a unique fishing method that has been practiced in Japan for over a thousand years. Specially trained birds called cormorants are guided by a master fisher, known as a Ushō, to catch river fish like sweetfish (ayu). The birds are tied with leashes to prevent them from swallowing the catch, which they bring back to the boat. While this may sound unusual to first-time viewers, the bond and rhythm between the Ushō and the birds make it a fascinating sight.
The Uji River’s Ukai is mentioned as early as the 10th-century diary “Kagerō Nikki,” giving it deep historical roots. During the event, Ms. Yoko Ezaki, the Ushō, dressed in traditional Heian-period attire—a wind-folded eboshi hat and straw waist skirt—gracefully guided six cormorants across the water. Spectators on the viewing boats cheered and applauded as the birds dove into the river and surfaced with glimmering fish.
Beyond its role as a fishing technique, Ukai is a living pageant of elegance and nostalgia. The fire-lit boats floating in the darkness, the ancient dress of the Ushō, and the quiet rhythm of nature evoke a time long past. Watching Ukai is not only a cultural experience, but also a poetic encounter with Japan’s seasonal beauty and emotional depth.
The Uji River Ukai will be held nightly until September 30.
「鵜飼い」、宇治川の夏の夜を照らす
7月1日、京都府の宇治川で伝統的な夏の光景である「鵜飼い」が始まりました。川の状態が安定していたおかげで、3年ぶりにシーズン初日に開催されました。観光客は川岸に集まり、夜の闇にゆらめく炎に照らされながら、この古くて魅力的な漁法を目にしました。
鵜飼いとは、日本で1000年以上にわたって行われている特別な漁法です。訓練された鳥である「鵜（う）」が、「鵜匠（うしょう）」と呼ばれる熟練の漁師によって操られ、アユなどの川魚を捕まえます。鵜が魚を飲み込まないよう紐でつながれており、捕まえた魚を舟に持ち帰ります。初めて見る人には奇妙に思えるかもしれませんが、鵜匠と鵜のあいだの呼吸や信頼関係が、実に見応えのある光景となっています。
宇治川の鵜飼いは、10世紀の「蜻蛉日記」にも記されており、深い歴史を持っています。イベントでは、鵜匠の江崎洋子さんが、平安時代の伝統衣装である風折烏帽子と腰蓑を身に着け、6羽の鵜を優雅に操りました。観覧船の乗客たちは、鵜が水に潜り魚を捕まえて戻るたびに、歓声と拍手を送りました。
鵜飼いは、ただの漁法というだけでなく、優雅さと郷愁を感じさせる「生きた絵巻物」です。夜の川に浮かぶ篝火の船、鵜匠の古風な装い、自然の静かなリズムは、遠い昔の時代を思い起こさせます。鵜飼いを見るということは、文化を体験することであると同時に、日本の季節の美しさと感情の奥深さに触れる詩的な出会いでもあります。
宇治川の鵜飼いは、9月30日まで毎晩開催されます。
