Every August, the city of Sendai transforms into a vibrant world of color and tradition with the arrival of the Sendai Tanabata Festival, one of Japan’s most famous summer festivals. Held from August 6th to 8th, this event attracts over two million visitors each year, filling the city with excitement, artistry, and a deep sense of cultural pride.
Tanabata, also known as the “Star Festival,” originates from a romantic legend about two star-crossed lovers, Orihime and Hikoboshi, who are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. While many cities in Japan celebrate Tanabata, Sendai’s version stands out for its grandeur and scale.
This year, around 300 large streamers, called fukinagashi, measuring about five meters in length, decorate the city’s seven main shopping arcades. Each streamer is handcrafted with exquisite detail and carries a unique message or theme. For example, one shop created streamers using old black-and-white newspaper print to honor the spirit of the Showa era, paying tribute to the shop’s history and the pioneers of the local community. Another display features decorations inspired by traditional kokeshi dolls from the Miyagi region, connecting the festival to local handicrafts.
Visitors can enjoy not only the stunning visual experience but also participate in interactive events like a digital stamp rally, where collecting digital stamps can lead to prize giveaways—a fun and modern twist to this traditional event.
Beyond the festival, Sendai offers plenty to explore during the summer. Stroll through lush green parks that earned the city its nickname “Mori no Miyako” (City of Trees), taste the region’s specialties such as gyutan (grilled beef tongue), and cool down with local desserts like zunda mochi (sweet mashed edamame on rice cakes).

「七夕（たなばた）」は「星祭り」としても知られ、織姫と彦星という年に一度だけ会うことが許される恋人たちのロマンチックな伝説に由来しています。日本の多くの都市で七夕は祝われますが、仙台の七夕まつりは、その壮大さと規模で際立っています。
今年は、約5メートルの長さの大きな吹き流し、ふきながし と呼ばれるものが、およそ300本、仙台市の7つの主要な商店街を飾りました。それぞれの吹き流しは、精巧な細部まで手作りされており、独自のメッセージやテーマを持っています。例えば、ある店では、昭和時代の精神をたたえるために、古い白黒新聞を使って吹き流しを作り、地域社会の先人たちへの敬意を表しました。別の展示では、宮城地方の伝統工芸品であるこけし人形から着想を得た飾りが登場しました。
