Kochi City is once again alive with vibrant colors, pounding rhythms, and boundless energy as the 72nd Yosakoi Festival begins. On August 9, the festivities kicked off with the eve celebrations and the Tosa Student Yosakoi Tournament, marking the start of four days of summer excitement. Dancers, who have long awaited this moment, took to stages across the city, captivating the crowds with their spirited performances. Over the main festival days, August 10 and 11, a total of 188 teams—around 18,000 performers—will showcase their routines at 16 venues.
The Tosa Student Yosakoi Tournament, now in its fifth year, brought together 10 university teams and 2 invited children’s teams at a special stage in front of Kochi Castle. Governor Hamada praised the event as a now-familiar prelude to the Yosakoi summer, encouraging participants to present their youthful energy and powerful dancing. One student dancer, Yamato Sawai from Hokkaido University, described performing in Kochi for the first time as a dream come true after dancing at the YOSAKOI Soran Festival in Sapporo earlier this year. “It felt amazing to unite with the audience,” he said with a smile.
The eve festival in Chuo Park also offered a mix of tradition and modern flair. After a safety prayer ceremony, the original naruko dance from the very first Yosakoi Festival was performed. Fireworks lit up the night sky above the Kagami River, and last year’s award-winning teams unveiled their new costumes. The crowd erupted when “Truck Yosakoi (Chifure),” aiming for an unprecedented fourth consecutive victory, took the stage—drawing the audience into the rhythm.
What is Yosakoi?
Born in Kochi in 1954, Yosakoi is a unique style of dance that blends traditional Japanese movements with upbeat, modern music. Performers often use naruko—small wooden clappers originally used in rice fields—as both musical instruments and props. The costumes are colorful, the choreography is dynamic, and the music ranges from traditional folk songs to rock, pop, or even samba. Yosakoi’s charm lies in its inclusivity: anyone, from children to seniors, can participate, and each team brings its own creative interpretation to the dance.

高知でよさこい祭りが幕を開ける
高知市は再び、鮮やかな色彩、響き渡るリズム、そして限りないエネルギーに満ちあふれ、第72回よさこい祭りが始まりました。8月9日、前夜祭と土佐学生よさこい大会で祭りの幕が開き、4日間にわたる夏の興奮がスタートしました。長くこの瞬間を待ち望んだ踊り子たちは、市内のステージで躍動し、その熱のこもった演舞で観客を魅了しました。8月10日と11日の本祭では、合計188チーム、約1万8,000人の出演者が16会場で演舞を披露します。
今年で5回目となる土佐学生よさこい大会は、高知城前の特設ステージで行われ、10の大学チームと招待された2つの子どもチームが参加しました。浜田知事は、このイベントが今や「よさこいの夏の前奏曲」として定着したと述べ、参加者に若さあふれるエネルギッシュで力強い踊りを披露するよう呼びかけました。北海道大学の沢井大和さんは、今年6月に札幌で開かれたYOSAKOIソーラン祭りにも出場し、今回初めて高知で踊ったことについて、「高知は憧れの舞台だった。観客と一体になれてとても楽しかった」と笑顔で語りました。
中央公園で行われた前夜祭では、伝統と現代の魅力が融合しました。安全祈願祭の後、第1回のよさこい祭りで踊られた原点の鳴子踊りが披露されました。鏡川の河畔からは花火が夜空を彩り、昨年の受賞チームは新調した衣装を披露しました。本祭で史上初の4連覇を目指す「とらっくよさこい（ちふれ）」が登場すると、観客は大歓声を上げ、リズムに合わせて体を揺らしていました。
よさこいとは？
1954年に高知で誕生したよさこいは、日本の伝統的な踊りの動きと、アップテンポで現代的な音楽を融合させた独自の踊りです。踊り手はしばしば、もともとは田んぼで使われていた小さな木製の鳴子を楽器や小道具として使います。衣装はカラフルで、振り付けはダイナミック。音楽は伝統的な民謡からロック、ポップ、さらにはサンバまで幅広く使われます。よさこいの魅力は、その包容力にあります。子どもから高齢者まで誰でも参加でき、各チームがそれぞれ独自の創意工夫を演舞に込めます。
観光客にとって、よさこいは単なる祭り以上のものであり、五感で味わう文化体験です。目を奪う光景、多彩な音楽、観客と踊り手の一体感が織りなす空間は、純粋な喜びに満ちています。道端で観るだけでも、踊りに飛び入り参加しても、よさこい祭りは太鼓の音が止んだ後も長く心に残る夏の思い出を与えてくれるでしょう。
