Japan’s fascination with dinosaurs reached a new milestone this summer. The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum in Katsuyama, one of the world’s leading dinosaur museums, recently celebrated welcoming its 15 millionth visitor since opening 25 years ago.
On August 21, a special ceremony was held at the museum’s entrance to mark the achievement. Families visiting during the summer holidays joined in the celebration, with about 20 children pulling strings together to break open a ceremonial ball, revealing a banner that read “Congratulations on 15 Million Visitors!” The crowd erupted in applause.
Among the guests was a 7-year-old boy from Yamagata Prefecture, who smiled brightly and said, “I love dinosaurs, and this is my first time here. My favorite is the Triceratops.”
Although the milestone was actually reached on August 16, the museum scheduled the ceremony later to avoid the busy Obon holiday crowds. Remarkably, it took just 305 days to attract another one million visitors since the museum hit the 14 million mark last October. Thanks to promotional efforts connected with the “Dinosaur Kingdom” pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, the museum has been drawing around 6,000 visitors per day, even on weekdays.
Museum Director Yumiko Tanigawa expressed her gratitude: “This was only possible because of the support of dinosaur fans. We want to continue to be a unique and attractive museum where people can have one-of-a-kind experiences.”

日本の恐竜への魅了は、この夏、新たな節目を迎えました。世界有数の恐竜博物館である福井県立恐竜博物館（勝山市）が、開館から25年で通算1500万人目の来館者を迎えたのです。
8月21日、その達成を記念する特別なセレモニーが博物館の入口で行われました。夏休みに訪れていた家族連れが祝賀に加わり、約20人の子どもたちが一緒にひもを引いてくす玉を割ると、「入館者1500万人おめでとう！」と書かれた垂れ幕が現れ、会場は大きな拍手に包まれました。
来場者の中には、山形県から家族と訪れた7歳の男の子もおり、明るい笑顔で「恐竜が大好きで、ここに来るのは初めて。トリケラトプスが一番好き」と語りました。
実際に1500万人を突破したのは8月16日でしたが、お盆休みの混雑を避けるため、式典はその後に行われました。昨年10月に1400万人を突破してからわずか305日での達成という快挙です。2025年大阪・関西万博で出展されている「恐竜王国」パビリオンの宣伝効果もあり、夏休み期間中は平日でも毎日約6000人が県内外から訪れています。
谷川由美子館長は次のように感謝を述べました。「恐竜ファンの皆さまのおかげで達成できました。ここでしか味わえない体験ができる、魅力ある博物館にしていきたいです。」
