Every summer, the quiet riverside town of Daisen in Akita Prefecture becomes the stage for Japan’s most prestigious fireworks competition – Ōmagari no Hanabi, formally known as the National Fireworks Competition. This year’s 97th edition, held on August 30 along the banks of the Omono River, drew a crowd of 100,000 spectators who were captivated by 18,000 brilliantly choreographed fireworks.
Often called the “championship of champions,” the event invites only the finest pyrotechnicians – those who have earned top results at other major competitions in Tsuchiura, Fukuroi, and Yatsushiro – to compete for the coveted Prime Minister’s Award. Twenty-eight companies from twelve prefectures, including local masters from Ōmagari, participated this year.
The competition is divided into four categories: daytime fireworks, the technically challenging “Shiniriwari-mono” and “Jiyūdama” shells, and the innovative “Creative Fireworks,” which originated in Ōmagari. The evening opened with a spectacular “Niagara Falls” display, followed by rapid-fire starmine sequences and a special program titled “Heartbeat of the Earth” by last year’s champion, Komatsu Fireworks Industry.
The night’s highlight was the massive “Sponsor’s Fireworks,” featuring a breathtaking 800-meter-wide starmine synchronized to the Finnish symphonic poem Finlandia. In just five and a half minutes, 2,120 shells painted the night sky. Traditional “Wabi” fireworks evoked the darkness of war, green “Yōraku” shells resembled falling auroras, and the radiant “Happō-zaki” represented hope for the future. The finale, a brilliant “Silver Chrysanthemum,” illuminated the entire venue, earning thunderous applause.
Master pyrotechnician Yoshikazu Konno, recognized as a “Contemporary Master Craftsman,” shared his hope: “If Ōmagari Fireworks can help support peace in the world, it is the highest honor for any fireworks artist.”
In three years, Ōmagari Fireworks will celebrate its 100th anniversary, promising an even more spectacular display of light, artistry, and emotion.
大曲の花火 ― 日本最高峰の花火競技大会が夜空を彩る
毎年夏、秋田県大仙市の静かな河川敷が、日本で最も権威ある花火競技大会「大曲の花火」（正式名称：全国花火競技大会）の舞台となります。今年の第97回大会は、8月30日に雄物川の河川敷で開催され、10万人の観客が、見事に演出された1万8千発の花火に魅了されました。
しばしば「王者の中の王者決定戦」と呼ばれるこの大会には、土浦、袋井、八代といった他の主要な競技大会で好成績を収めた、最高の花火師たちだけが招かれ、栄誉ある内閣総理大臣賞を競います。今年は、大曲の地元の花火師を含む12都県から28社が参加しました。
競技は4つの部門に分かれています：昼花火、技術的に難易度の高い「芯入割物」と「自由玉」、そして大曲で生まれた革新的な「創造花火」です。夜の部は、壮大な「ナイアガラ」で幕を開け、速射連発のスターマインや、昨年のチャンピオンである小松煙火工業による特別プログラム「大地の鼓動」が続きました。
夜のハイライトは、幅800メートルにも及ぶ超特大スターマイン「大会提供花火」でした。フィンランドの交響詩「フィンランディア」に合わせ、わずか5分半で2120発の花火が夜空を彩りました。日本伝統のほの暗い「和火」は戦禍を、緑の光が垂れる「葉落」はオーロラを、光線が広がる「八方咲」は未来を表現しました。フィナーレは、会場全体を白い光で照らす「銀菊」で締めくくられ、観客席から割れんばかりの拍手が沸き起こりました。
「現代の名工」として知られる花火師・今野義和さんはこう語りました：「もし大曲の花火が世界の平和を後押しできるなら、花火師としてこれ以上の名誉はありません。」
3年後、大曲の花火は100回記念大会を迎え、さらに壮大な光と芸術、感動の祭典になることが約束されています。
