Oda Nobunaga, one of Japan’s most daring and influential warlords, built the legendary Azuchi Castle in 1576. Known for his bold vision and relentless drive toward unifying Japan, Nobunaga left behind a legacy that continues to fascinate people today. Although the castle was destroyed after the Incident at Honnō-ji in 1582 and no original blueprints remain, it has long been remembered as a “phantom castle.”
Now, thanks to digital innovation, visitors can once again experience the grandeur of Azuchi Castle. Shiga Prefecture has developed a free smartphone app, launching October 11, that uses AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) technology to reconstruct the castle on its original site in Ōmihachiman City. By pointing your phone at designated spots along the ruins, you can see 3D renderings of the castle’s main tower, gates, and halls. The app also provides voice and text explanations, offers six different architectural reconstructions of the central tower, and even allows you to take commemorative photos with famous historical figures such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Akechi Mitsuhide.
This project coincides with the 450th anniversary of the castle’s construction in 2026. The governor of Shiga expressed his hope that visitors will not only enjoy the spectacle of the digital castle but also reflect on Nobunaga’s vision for the future of Japan.
