Nestled in the heart of Kyoto, Eikando Temple is one of Japan’s most celebrated spots for autumn foliage. Officially known as Zenrin-ji, this temple belongs to the Jodo sect of Buddhism and dates back over 1,100 years. While beautiful year-round, Eikando becomes truly magical in late November when its vast temple grounds glow with shades of crimson and gold.
The temple’s layout follows the natural slope of the Higashiyama mountains, and visitors can wander through winding paths, wooden corridors, and serene gardens surrounded by Japanese maples. The reflection of the autumn leaves on Hojo Pond, with the elegant pagoda rising in the distance, creates one of Kyoto’s most iconic seasonal scenes.
Eikando is also famous for its statue of the “Mikaeri Amida” — the “Looking-Back Amida Buddha.” Unlike most Buddha statues that face forward, this one turns its head to the side, said to symbolize compassion and the Buddha’s willingness to look back and guide those who are left behind.
In recent years, Eikando’s special night illuminations have drawn many visitors, both Japanese and international, who come to witness the glowing red maples mirrored on the water under the moonlight. Whether by day or night, the temple offers a deeply spiritual and visually stunning experience that captures the essence of Kyoto’s autumn.
京都・永観堂 ― 古都に息づく紅葉の美
京都の中心に佇む永観堂（正式名称：禅林寺）は、日本でも屈指の紅葉名所として知られています。浄土宗西山禅林寺派の総本山であり、1,100年以上の歴史を誇ります。毎年11月下旬になると境内一面が紅や黄金色に染まり、その美しさはまさに「秋の京都」を象徴する風景です。
東山の自然の傾斜に沿って造られた境内には、曲がりくねった参道や木造の回廊、静かな庭園が広がり、紅葉に包まれた風情を楽しむことができます。放生池に映る紅葉と、背後にそびえる多宝塔の姿は、京都を代表する秋の絶景として多くの人々を魅了します。
また、永観堂といえば「見返り阿弥陀像」でも有名です。普通の阿弥陀如来像と異なり、少し振り返るような姿をしており、「遅れる者をも導く慈悲の心」を表していると伝えられています。
近年では、夜間ライトアップも人気を集めており、月明かりと灯りに照らされた紅葉が水面に映る幻想的な光景を目当てに、国内外から多くの人が訪れます。昼も夜も、永観堂は京都の秋の美しさと精神性を体感できる、まさに特別な場所です。
